In January 2003, CALCASA received a grant from the Office of the Governor, Office of Criminal Justice Planning, to support the activities of the California Campus Sexual Assault Task Force. The California Campus Sexual Assault Research Project (CSARP) provided CALCASA with the opportunity to further establish itself as an expert in the field of violence against women on college and university campuses, as it already has through the U.S. Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women Technical Assistance Program for Grants to Reduce Violent Crimes Against Women on Campus Program. This page provides an over-view of the project and related activities.
CALCASA supported the activities of a 15-member, Governor-appointed Task Force. The Task Force was charged with gathering information on the following seven issues:
- campus law enforcement policies that address sexual assault
- campus law enforcement preparation regarding sexual assault
- campus health prevention policies that address sexual assault
- faculty and employee education on sexual assault issues
- sexual assault prevention education programs for students
- victim-sensitive campus judicial polices addressing sexual assault
- compliance with and policies regarding the Jeanne Clery Act
Throughout this 15-month project period, CALCASA gathered information on behalf of the Task Force from all campuses of the UC and CSU systems, in addition to 10 independent institutions and 10 California Community Colleges. Research efforts included the review of campus websites and phone interviews with relevant personnel on campuses. In order to represent concerned stakeholders, public hearings were conducted. A small number of site visits were performed as well. Information gathered, such as campus law enforcement response protocols, campus health center policies, campus counseling services brochures, and rape prevention education program information was reviewed by the Task Force and a Campus Blueprint to Address Sexual Assault was developed and delivered to the Office of Emergency Services.
The Blueprint presents recommendations regarding statewide policies for sexual violence prevention activities on campuses, training for relevant personnel, and campus victim service systems.
