**These web conferences are intended for advocates at sexual assault agencies funded by Cal OES Rape Crisis Center grants.
CLOSED CAPTIONING will be available for all these web conferences. 

Overview:
This five-session virtual training series will cover the updated California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) Sexual Assault Training Standards for Rape Crisis Centers in California. In addition to advocacy training topics, this training will also include information regarding: compliance with the California Sexual Assault Counselor Certification, required time allocation for each training module, media restrictions, and ensuring the inclusivity of special populations. Agency Volunteer/Training Coordinators, Advocates, Advocacy Managers and Executive Directors are encouraged to attend to get the most up to date information regarding the Sexual Assault Counselor 40-Hour Training standards and requirements.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify all of the new CalOES training standards and facilitation requirements for the 40-hour Sexual Assault Counselor training
  • Participants will be able to describe how to achieve compliance with the California Sexual Assault Counselor Certification
  • Participants will be able to develop Sexual Assault Training practices that are in  alignment with the CalOES training standards

Session 1 | Description:

Session one of the CalOES Sexual Assault Training Standards: Materials and Methods Web Conference Series will discuss the training standards related to an overview of sexual assault and the intersection of discrimination and oppression with sexual violence. Mandatory training topics addressed will include the history of sexual violence, definitions, trauma, marginalization, awareness of discrimination, cultural considerations and providing appropriate referrals. Session one will also include an overview of the web series, Trainer’s Guide, and CalOES application standards general information.

Session 1 | Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify the training standards and requirements related to sexual assault overview and discrimination/anti-oppression including how this fits into the larger context of sexual violence work and the Sexual Assault Counselor training.
  • Participants will be able to describe strategies to achieve compliance with the standards in units A & B in the California’s Sexual Assault Training Standards Guide.

Units C & D – Child and Teen Sexual Abuse

Session 2 | Description:
Session two of the CalOES Sexual Assault Training Standards: Materials and Methods Web Conference Series will discuss the training standards related to child sexual abuse and teen sexual assault. Mandatory training topics addressed will include types of child sexual abuse, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), mandated reporting, child/teen development, teen risk factors, legal issues, counseling considerations and commercially sexually exploited minors.

Session 2 | Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify the training standards and requirements related to child and teen sexual abuse including logistical considerations.
  • Participants will be able to describe strategies to achieve compliance with the standards in units C & D in the California’s Sexual Assault Training Standards Guide.

Units E & F – Crisis Intervention and Resources & Referrals

Session 3 | Description
Session three of the CalOES Sexual Assault Training Standards: Materials and Methods Web Conference Series will discuss the training standards related to crisis intervention and resources & referrals. Mandatory training topics addressed will include trauma-informed care, survivor options, suicidality, confidentiality, crisis intervention with support people, sex trafficking, referral procedures, local services, and best practices for making referrals.

  • Participants will be able to identify the training standards and requirements related to crisis intervention and referrals including Trainers’ Guide learning objectives.
  • Participants will be able to describe strategies to achieve compliance with the standards in units E & F in the California’s Sexual Assault Training Standards Guide.

SESSION 4

Units G, H & I – Multidisciplinary Engagement, Medical, and Law Enforcement

Session 4 | Description:
Session four of the CalOES Sexual Assault Training Standards: Materials and Methods Web Conference Series will discuss the training standards related to multidisciplinary engagement, medical services and law enforcement. Mandatory training topics addressed will include goals of collaboration, the criminal legal system, military, education, detention facilities, the role of the Advocate, community partners, privileged communication, survivor rights, medical/legal best practices, health considerations, forensic medical exam, and investigation procedures.

Session 4 | Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to identify the training standards and requirements related to multidisciplinary engagement, medical services, and law enforcement.
  • Participants will be able to describe strategies to achieve compliance with the standards in units G, H & I in the California’s Sexual Assault Training Standards Guide.

Units J & K – Legal/Court and Agency Procedures & Requirements

Session 5 | Description
Session five of the CalOES Sexual Assault Training Standards: Materials and Methods Web Conference Series will discuss the training standards related to court proceedings and agency procedures. Mandatory training topics addressed will include survivor rights, common defenses in sexual assault cases, role of the Advocate, civil suits, victim witness, agency service standards and limitations, client documentation, confidential records and subpoenas, and volunteer time documentation.

Session 5 | Objectives

  • Participants will be able to identify the training standards and requirements related to legal/court and agency procedures & requirements including considerations for reporting requirements.
  • Participants will be able to describe strategies to achieve compliance with the standards in units J & K in the California’s Sexual Assault Training Standards Guide.
